Microbiological Incubators

PHCbi (formerly Panasonic) has a full line of microbiological incubators that are made for applications that require precise temperature control. Whether you need a heated unit or one that gives you flexibility to heat and cool, PHCbi has the model for you.

Additionally, Corepoint Scientific Temperature Test Chambers are ideal for stability testing, shelf life, package testing and accelerated aging for a variety of products and packaging. These come with a variety of accessories as well, such as temperature monitoring device options, additional shelves, and IQ/OQ/PQ validation packages.

Heated Incubator

With their ability to maintain temperatures upwards of 80°C, heated incubators (commonly referred to as heat-only or standard incubators) create the optimal environment for microbial or cell culture growth.

Refrigerated Incubator

Refrigerated incubators (also known as low temperature incubators) are able to maintain temperatures as low as -10°C. This makes them ideal for housing samples that require conditions to be cooler than the ambient environment.

Microbiological Incubator Considerations

  • Airflow: All of our microbiological incubators are forced air models, which provides tight temperature uniformity and stability.
  • Cooling type: Our Corepoint Scientific incubators use natural hydrocarbon refrigerant for environmentally friendly energy savings.
  • Placement and location: To ensure proper heat ventilation and access to cords and sockets, it’s crucial to choose a location with at least three inches of surrounding space. The chosen area should have low humidity and be away from drafts and out of direct sunlight.
  • Size: Our microbiological incubators come in a wide variety of sizes, with some small enough to fit comfortably on a tabletop and others featuring internal capacities of up to 49 cubic feet.
  • Temperature: The nature of the work being conducted in a laboratory will determine exact incubation temperature requirements. To that end, we offer incubators with a variety of temperature ranges. For example, PHCbi’s MIR-154, MIR-254, and MIR-554 models support a temperature range of -10°C to +60°C.

Common Microbiological Incubator Applications

Microbiological incubators are specifically designed to create environments in which microbes — such as bacteria, yeasts, fungi, viruses, and so on — thrive. By maintaining precise temperature settings, these incubators can support their growth for a variety of scientific purposes, including:

  • Fermentation
  • Food and beverage testing
  • Genetic research
  • Vaccine development
  • Water quality testing

FAQs
What are microbiological incubators used for in a lab?
Microbiological incubators — commonly referred to as heat-only or standard incubators — are most frequently used to support the growth of bacteria and other microbial cultures for research and testing purposes.
How do microbiological incubators work?
By maintaining specific internal temperatures, these lab incubators are able to create the optimal environment for the efficient growth of certain microbiological cultures while limiting the likelihood of contamination.
What is the difference between a microbiological incubator and a CO2 incubator?
A microbiological incubator solely controls temperature. A CO2 incubator uses CO2 to control the pH of the cultures stored inside and has high humidity levels in the chamber.
Do I need to monitor the temperature in my microbiological incubator?
While today’s incubators come with built-in temperature sensors, it’s important to verify that their readings are accurate. We recommend using a second thermometer to identify any discrepancies.
What should I pay attention to when choosing a location for my microbiological incubator?
The correct placement of your incubator ensures efficient operation. When choosing a location for your unit, it’s crucial to keep it away from drafty areas or vibrating equipment and out of direct sunlight. Additionally, you can limit the potential for contamination by avoiding humid areas and placing floor models on stands.
How big are microbiological incubators?
Incubator sizes vary depending on manufacturer and unit type. At D.A.I., we have models that range from 1–3 cubic feet up to 49 cubic feet.
